Common fault diagnosis and analysis of each system of Deutz engine

May. 21, 2025

Introduction

The Deutz engine produced by Deutz in Cologne, Germany has the advantages of small size, light weight, good economy, reliable use, simple installation, convenient maintenance, relatively small environmental pollution, etc., and is widely used due to its high thermal efficiency, good power and high safety. It is especially suitable for supporting mining and engineering equipment for underground mines and tunnel construction. However, due to its complex system structure and high use requirements, only by being familiar with its structural principles and mastering the knowledge of common equipment fault maintenance can the equipment be fully utilized to ensure the economic, safe and normal operation of the equipment, so that it can better serve production.

1. Cooling system failure

The most common failure of the cooling system is abnormal coolant temperature, which can be caused by the following aspects:

1. The oil level of the oil pan is too high.

Analysis:

If the oil level of the oil pan is too high, so that the connecting rod journal is immersed in the engine oil, when the diesel engine is running, the crankshaft and the connecting rod big head stirring the engine oil will generate additional heat due to friction.

For the above reasons, additional heat is transferred to the coolant in the oil cooler, causing the coolant temperature to increase additionally.

2. Incorrect pressure cap or failed pressure cap will cause excessive coolant loss and diesel engine overheating.

3. Air or combustion gas enters the cooling system.

Analysis:

a. When air enters the cooling system, it will cause the coolant to overflow due to heat. At the same time, the air will expand and the cooling system pressure will be high, causing the pressure cap to open, thereby increasing the coolant loss;

b. The cylinder head gasket leaks and allows gas or compressed air to enter the cooling system, which will also have the same consequences as above;

c. If the air or gas entering the cooling system is not discharged in time, it will return to the water pump inlet with the coolant, causing the water pump flow to decrease and the diesel engine outlet water temperature to increase.

4. The cooling water pump flow is reduced.

Analysis:

A loose belt or a damaged water pump impeller will also reduce its flow, but before checking its flow and replacing the water pump, other related parts should be checked according to the troubleshooting procedure.

2. Lubrication system failure

To diagnose lubrication system failure, it is necessary to check various parts related to the engine oil, such as the oil pressure gauge, oil fluid, oil contamination, oil viscosity, etc.

1. Excessive oil consumption

First, determine whether the diesel engine has external oil leakage;

Second, check whether the diesel engine crankcase ventilation system is blocked; if the piston ring seal is poor, the oil enters the combustion chamber and is burned or the leakage is too large, and the oil droplets are blown out of the engine body through the crankcase ventilation mechanism along with the leaked combustion gas.

2. Excessive oil pressure

In cold weather, the oil pressure is usually too high after the diesel engine is started for the first time.

It may also be that the oil pressure regulating valve is stuck in the high-pressure position, the oil level is too high, the oil viscosity is too high, etc.

3. Excessive oil pressure

Many lubrication system failures can reduce the oil pressure.

When the oil pressure is found to be too low, first determine whether the diesel engine oil level, oil filter, oil pressure gauge, oil pump, and oil quality are normal, and then check other system components.

(1) Oil cooler

Possible locations:

Cooler rupture, loose inlet and outlet flanges, damaged gaskets, and cooler core rupture.

Inspection method:

When the diesel engine is running, the oil pressure is higher than the coolant pressure. If any of the above problems occur in the oil cooler, the oil will mix into the coolant.

Open the radiator cap and you can see that there is oil in the coolant, and the coolant will overflow from the radiator.

(2) Intercooler

Analysis:

If the intercooler leaks, the coolant will leak into the intake pipe and then flow into the cylinder, and then leak into the oil pan through the piston ring channel.

Inspection method:

Remove the intercooler and check if there are signs of coolant leaking into the intake pipe.
