Why do commercial businesses prefer brushless diesel generators over brushed generators?

Diesel generators are an essential part of business operations as they provide reliable and stable power during power outages caused by any reason. Diesel generators have an alternator that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. It does this by using a rotor rotating magnetic field to produce energy.

For brushed diesel generators, carbon brushes are used to conduct electricity. On the other hand, brushless alternators use two sets of rotors that rotate together to produce and transmit current. This type of diesel generator has an exciter alternator where the exciter armature is the rotating armature while the exciter field winding acts as a fixed armature. Here, the exciter field creates a magnetic field with the help of an automatic voltage rule or residual magnetic field. When it starts rotating, a voltage is generated in the exciter armature, which in turn supplies current to the main field, thereby creating a magnetic field in the main armature.

Brushless diesel generators are considered to be more efficient compared to brushed diesel generators as they operate in a self-controlled mode. Apart from this, there are several other benefits of brushless diesel generators that make it a better choice than brushed diesel generators.

Brushless diesel generators are also known as permanent magnet generators. In a permanent magnet synchronous generator, the excitation field is provided by permanent magnets instead of fixed coil wires!

Since brushless AC generators have no brushes and fewer moving parts, they require less maintenance and repairs. This not only makes them hassle-free but also more economical. Since there are no brushes, there is little friction inside the machine during the operation of the generator.

Overheating Issues

The contact resistance between the brushes and the commutator is very high. This leads to greater friction and a high probability of overheating. Magnets help brushed diesel generators operate, and high temperatures caused by overheating can damage the magnets, resulting in expensive repairs.

Low efficiency

A large amount of mechanical energy generated by brushes is converted into heat due to friction, which reduces the efficiency of brushed generators. A lot of energy is wasted in this process.
